Boys Win State Championship in Singles and Doubles Tennis

The Maharishi School tennis team returned from the state tournament with a trunk full of trophies.

Junior Sam Stickels defeated long time Fairfield rival, Govi Punj, in a final that reversed the outcome of their district result two weeks ago. En-route to the state title, Stickels defeated the #1, #2, and #4 seeds without dropping a set. According to Coach Briggs, "I was concerned that Sam's road to the finals was taking a toll, but Sam saved his finest performance of the year for the season's biggest match. When Sam's game is firing on all cylinders, you just sit back and enjoy the show."

Maharishi's senior tandem of Solaris Nite and Surya Sawhney lived up to their #1 seed by defeating Fort Dodge St. Edmonds top team from last year's state champs. Nite and Sawhney dominated the team of Zach Gailey and John Eide, defeating them 6-1, 6-1 after beating their St. Edmond's teammates in the semi-final match up. "Surya and Solaris played superb doubles today. They've had a great year, but I wasn't expecting the domination," explained Briggs. "Our guys never wavered under the pressure. Everybody gets nervous competing for a state crown, and this was their first trip to state. Surya and Solaris were unbeatable today."
