Chinese Students Host New Year Celebration

January 23 marked the beginning of Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon. Maharishi School’s 12 boarding students from China, together with Chinese-American students, hosted a celebration Monday morning in the auditorium. The stage was colorfully decorated with red lanterns and an auspicious Chinese dragon, symbolic of good luck, power and strength.

Each student showed slides from their home city and told stories about celebrating Chinese New Year with their families. Traditionally families in China enjoy eating special foods, especially dumplings, they honor their elders, watch a huge and elaborate celebration on television, and set off fireworks at midnight.

Entertainment was provided by Wu Zhong Zhe (Kevin), who played a piano solo, and Jiang Hefei, who played a violin solo. Both performances were complex and beautiful and the audience responded with standing ovations.

Mrs. Lijuan Cai was honored for her dedicated work as International Student Advisor.

The students from China graciously served traditional New Year’s dumplings to everyone at the assembly.
