The Maharishi School boys tennis program won all three titles at the District meet Thursday at the Punj Tennis Center and Fairfield Middle school. Chandre Morales won the singles title and the doubles title was taken by Kai Vessey and Daniel Zhu. Karthik Vempathi contributed a singles win, as did Caleb Mulleneaux and Devan Burke in doubles, to earn the Pioneers the team championship as well.
The team now plays Sub-state on Saturday in Pella. Maharishi School will play a team dual verses Pella in the morning and, if they win, the winner of Grinnell/Fort Madison in the afternoon. Play will begin around 8:15 at the Pella City Park courts, just west of Pella High School on University Street. Please come to cheer the team on if you can. This is the first year in the past several that Sub-State has not been held in Fairfield, so the team will appreciate any support you can lend.
If they win the afternoon match on Saturday, the team is in the final four and will play for the State Championship on May 31st, the Tuesday after Memorial Day, usually at Waveland Park in Des Moines, starting at 8:30 am. Chandre, Devan and Kai have already qualified to compete at the singles and doubles State Championships at Byrnes Park in Waterloo on Friday and Saturday, May 27 & 28 starting around 9:00.
The girls final (most likely) matches of the season will be held in Fairfield tomorrow (Thursday). In this Regional tournament doubles pairs Melat Gebremariam/Madelyn Stood and Amber Qu/Catherine Yang will play at the Punj Tennis Center beginning around 9:00 am. Singles players Univa Song and Amie Saine will play at the Middle School at 9:00. Winners will continue their matches at the Middle School. Eight teams are participating. Fairfield's Ananada Charoenkul is expected to be the #1 seed. Finalists qualify for the State tournament on June 2 & 3 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.
