Pioneer Boys Light Up Nikes In Opener

From the Fairfield Ledger -- Michael Leach Apr 03, 2012--

Though the weather was hot on the Punj Tennis Center courts Monday, the play of the Maharishi School boys’ tennis team proved even hotter.

The Pioneer boys picked up the 2012 season right where they left off last year and rolled to a 9-0 match sweep against Burlington-Notre Dame/West Burlington in Fairfield.

“We opened our 25th season with a satisfying win — all four returning starts from our 2011 state runner-up team contributed, and newcomers Sam Stickels and Surya Sawhney made impressive debuts,” said Pioneer head coach Lawrence Eyre.

In all, the Pioneers took 6-0, 6-0 wins in three of nine matches Monday. MSAE surrendered just nine games in singles play and another nine in doubles.

Both Thomas Weiss, MSAE’s No. 2, and No. 4 player Raphael Gelfand rolled to clean sweeps in singles play. Freshman Stickels and sophomore Solaris Nite teamed up at No. 3 doubles to take the Pioneers’ third 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Both Stickels and Sawhney surrendered one game in their No. 3 and No. 6 singles matches, respectively, and Nite surrendered just two games at No. 5 singles. At No. 1 singles, Sam Arsanjani walked away relatively unscathed against skilled foreign exchange student Kaz Terada, winning his sets 6-2 and 6-3.

Maharishi School returns to the courts Saturday at the Warrior Invitational in Cedar Rapids. There, the Pioneers will face larger schools Iowa City West, Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Davenport Central and Decorah.
