The Maharishi School Pioneers won a triple crown at the district tennis meet today, click here for a video of the awards being presented!
“I’ve learned that there’s an element of luck in the district meet. The pairings are drawn out of a hat, and to be honest, I was worried as I left the coaches meeting,” admitted Coach Briggs. “Caleb and Devan drew the 4th seed in the first round and Karthik Venpati drew a higher ranked player in his opening match. If we lose those matches it’s a long day.”
Caleb and Devan played brilliantly, winning 6-2, 6-3 over 4th seeded Burlington Notre Dame and Karthik came from behind to win a tough match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 against FHS' Logan Williams.
While the lower players on the lineup were racking up valuable points for the Pioneers, their top players eased through the singles and doubles draws without the loss of a set.
“I expected Chandre to win singles, and he only lost a few games all day. But I wasn’t sure about Kai and Daniel since they haven’t played together much this spring. But Kai and Daniel played inspired tennis all day. They were aggressive, totally focused, and played exceptionally mature doubles for a couple of sophomores.”
“What pleases me most is that all six guys contributed in a big way today. I’m a believer in the team concept even though tennis is largely an individual sport.”
"Sometimes the boys tease me that I’m ‘old school', but it’s inevitable that a player’s going to face adversity on the court, and sometimes off court too. I want them to know how to handle the good and the not so good. Today nothing rattled us. That’s the sign of mature player.”
