Pioneers Beaten in First Round of State Tournament

Long time rival Pella defeated the Pioneers 5-2 today in the first round of the state tennis tournament played at the MUM Recreation Center in FF.

"Pella’s been knocking on the door for a long time. As a team and community, they showed serious resolve today. They’re on their way to the final four in Des Moines,” said Coach Briggs. “Some close matches went the other way, but our boys showed a lot of maturity. I thought we competed well.”

Pioneer #1, Kai Vessey appears to be peaking right on schedule as the state tournament approaches. Vessey defeated Pella #1, Jordan Roozeboom, 6-1, 6-3 to share ‘Pioneer Player of the Match’ with Devan Burke, who defeated Pella senior, Michael Reed, 6-3, 7-5.

“We’re excited about our chances at state. We feel we have one of the very best singles players in the state as well as one of the top doubles teams." Kai, Vessey Devan Burke, and Daniel Zhu compete for state individual honors in Waterloo next Friday and Saturday. The team championship may not be within the Pioneers reach this spring, but the singles and doubles titles are.
