Pioneers Capture District Title in Boys’ Tennis

The Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment tennis boys’ team captured another district title Thursday in Fairfield.

Rain forced the meet from Fairfield Middle School into Maharishi University of Management Recreation Center. The players attempted at one time to go back outside, but the move outdoors was short-lived.

MSAE won the district meet and will move on in team play. The Pioneers finished with 28 team points. Keokuk was second with 15, while Fairfield finished third with 14. Mt. Pleasant, Fort Madison, Davis County and Burlington Notre Dame rounded out the field.

Fairfield’s Govi Punj won his second district title in three years by defeating MSAE’s Sam Stickels 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Punj qualified for the state tournament, which will be on May 30 in Waterloo. Stickels will advance as well because he was runner-up.

The MSAE doubles team of Surya Sawhney and Solaris Nite beat Mt. Pleasant 6-0, 6-2 and will also compete at state.

Fairfield plays a playoff against Keokuk Saturday to determine who will join the Pioneers in team play at the substate meet.

Chandre Morales finished fourth for the Pioneers individually. The doubles team of David Fleshman and Girindra Selleck also finished fourth.
