Pioneers Defeat Iowa City West, Extend Record to 5-0

“The boys picked a good day to play well,” said Coach Briggs. "Iowa City West brought a couple of strong varsity players, but even JV players on a team that won 3 consecutive state 2-A team titles are solid.”

In a rematch from last year, Pioneer #1 Chandre Morales lost a close contest to Brad DiLeo, 6-3, 6-7, 10-7. At #2, Kai raised his level in both singles and doubles. “Kai has a lot of natural ability and sometimes he coasts to victory. Today, Kai locked in, and the results showed.”

Pioneer #4 Daniel Zhu and #6 Karthik Venpati kept their undefeated dual meet records in tact. “We always get full effort out of Daniel. He’s quick, covers the court really well, and wears down his opponents,” said Briggs.

According to Briggs, “The thing holding us back has been illness, but we’re hoping everyone is well in May because we need to continue to improve." District is May 12th, just two weeks away.

For his strong singles win and gutsy doubles play, Daniel Zhu is our Pioneer Player of the Match.
