Maharishi School, Oskaloosa, Knoxville, and Ottumwa squared off at Ottumwa Park today, but rain showers chased the teams off the courts after the morning singles competition was nearly completed.
Pioneer #2 Kai Vessey dominated his flight, winning 22 out of a possible 24 games. Devan Burke was a game away from winning #5 position when the rains came. Pioneer senior Chandre Morales lost a tight contest against Knoxville senior, AJ Jackson, 5-4, after leading 4-1. “With the abbreviated scoring system, it’s crucial to get off a fast start,” explained Coach Briggs.
“Now we move on to post season,” added Coach Briggs. “District is Thursday at the FF Middle School courts. The competition gets stiffer from here on, but our boys have put in the work. This is our favorite part of the season. Every guy on the team is looking forward to district, and the chance to qualify for the state tournament.”
