Ross Emmanuel Wins Silver at State Track Meet

Maharishi School junior Ross Emmanuel won a silver medal for his 2nd place finish in the 800 meter run at the May 23 Iowa State Track Meet in Des Moines. This is the first state track medal won by a Maharishi School student since 2006.

Ross ran track last year when a student in South Africa. “The meets there were generally larger,” Ross said. “There’s a lot of competition. The state track meet here was bigger, though. I didn’t expect it to be that big.”

Ross said that the 800 meter run is his best race. “I like the distance and the dynamics of the race, especially the last leg.”

He thinks that his experience this year at the state meet will better prepare him for next year because he got to see the athletes he’ll run against next year. “You always learn from the first time you do something,” he said.

Athletic Director Rig Gelfand said, “A silver medal is a great accomplishment for a first-time competitor at a state track meet. You cannot overestimate the power of the moment of competing in such a large event.”

Going to Washington, DC, for the summer, Ross will be spending time with his family. He plans to run while there, getting ready for next fall’s cross country season.
