Maharishi School senior Dia Huggins will be advancing to the state tournament after claiming the Regional Singles title on Thursday, May 21, at the Punj Courts in Fairfield.
Among the teams in competition for Region 7 were Fairfield High School, Notre Dame West Burlington, Mount Pleasant, Keokuk, Holy Trinity, Davis County, and Fort Madison.
Huggins defeated #2 seed Jordyn Thompson of Davis County in the semifinals 6-4, 6-2, followed by a decisive 5-2 set in the finals against undefeated #1 seed Stephanie Wills from Notre Dame.
"It's a Cinderella story," said coach Sheila Higgins. "Dia had a challenging season and suffered some difficult losses against both Stephanie and Jordyn earlier in the year. Something big shifted in her game over the past few weeks--everything came together in a pretty profound and noticeable way."
"I was really struck by the level of competitive maturity that Dia played with on Thursday. She stepped onto the court with complete poise and confidence and played the best tennis of her life without batting an eye. It was a beautiful display of the sport and a joy to watch," Higgins added.
"I felt like I played my best game," said Dia, "and that the past four years of work all came together."
Teammate Jacqueline Leete, also a senior, took fourth place after an impressive 2 1/2 hour showdown against Wills, 3-6, 2-6.
Huggins will play at the State Tournament on Thursday, June 4th, at the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex in Ankeny, Iowa.
