At the regional competition for the Iowa High School Speech Association in Keokuk, 10 of 12 Maharishi School performances received the highest ranking and will perform in the state competition on February 4th in Cedar Rapids.
This year’s performances are again directed by Brendan Thomas, winner of the IHSSA Critic’s Choice Award multiple times both as a performer and coach. Mosie Lasagna and Jan Thatcher lend their expertise to the Choral Reading and Thomas Selleck is coaching two of the mime performances, while Malinda Gosvig assistant directs the one act play, The Lonely Planet.
Avenue Q, a musical theater performance which has won 3 Tony awards on Broadway, is a hilarious coming-of age parable. Characters in this 10 minute excerpt discover that in the adult world they are not as “special” as Sesame Street would have them believe. Princeton, a recent college grad, gets support from a colorful cast of friends to discover his purpose in life. Student performers are Hifza Akber, Michael Corazza, Eugenia Davis, Mickey DeAngelis, James Francis, and Leanna Miller.
Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, Act 1, is an award-winning musical tragicomedy featuring the misadventures of Dr. Horrible, an aspiring supervillain. Girindra Selleck plays the unfortunate Dr. Horrible, while Isabel Reed plays Penny, the girl of his dreams and Raffi Gelfand rounds out the ensemble as the heroic Captain Hammer.
The Lonely Planet, by Steven Dietz, is a touching one act play in which two characters, played by Jonina Thorsteinsdottir and Essa Johnson, find the courage to face their fears and develop the kind of friendship that elevates the spirit. The acting is so good that the judge mistakenly thought the character's psycho-physiological challenges were actually the actress'.
The ensemble selection is from the musical Company, by George Firth and Steven Sondheim. The play premiered in 1970 and won 6 Tony Awards. Chosie Titus, Toby James and Solaris Nite perform a vignette about the decidedly single Bobby at the wedding of two of his friends.
A Fairy Tale is a wonderfully lyrical choral reading performance which draws from poetry and stories both familiar and obscure. Student performers are Leanna Miller, Jonina Thorsteinsdottir, Essa Johnson, Chosie Titus, Eugenia Davis, Sophia Medvedeva, Isabel Reed, Hifza Akber, Katya Sheridan, Paul DeAngelis, Bryan Prather-Huff, Luis Giron, Solaris Nite, Surya Sawhney, Girindra Selleck, Avery Mulleneaux, and Michael Corazza.
Where can you see all 37 Shakespeare plays in less than half an hour? At The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) reader's theater performance! This hilarious performance stars Tomas Bousquet, Alex Hoffman, Brecon Llewellyn, Brandon Prather-Huff, Bimba Shrestha, Niko Thiel, Davin Titus, Nathaniel Zhu, Demitri Makeig, Lalith Pullapantula, Sam Stickels, Kishan Thijm, and David Wadsworth.
Group Mirage is a mime about a family lost in the desert and is performed by Donovan Schroeder, Alejandra Giron, Katya Sheridan, Avery Mulleneaux and Vinit Suganur.
Under the Bed is a funny mime about a family of monsters. Performers are Bryan Prather-Huff, Luis Giron and Avery Travis.
Sure to delight, La Cirque Magiques' is a mime about a magical circus. Student performers are Dia Huggins, Alina Knight, Jaya Muehlman, Gabriella Sleiman, Jacqueline Leete, and Kadie Roberts.
A funny thing happened on the way to the theater... Three improvisational teams gave fantastic and hilarious performances. The improv performers are: Paul DeAngelis, Toby James, Raphael Gelfand, Mickey DeAngelis, Sophia Medvedeva, Demitri Makeig, Surya Sawhney, Kadie Roberts, Avery Travis, Alejandra Giron, Vinit Suganur, and Donovan Schroeder.
