Students for a Creative Iowa Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Iowa Students Reap Rewards From Creative Problem Solving
Twenty-five years ago, a small group of Iowa adults asked “what if,” and the result today is Students for a Creative Iowa, a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging creativity, teamwork and problem-solving among Iowa’s youth. The organization, also known as cre8iowa, provides a safe environment for students to learn, grow, take measured risks and be successful by participating in the Destination Imagination® program.
At the sub-state tournament on March 9, students from all over the state demonstrated innovative solutions to scientific, technical, structural, fine arts, improvisational and service learning challenges. What makes this program stand out from other student programs is the fact that teams must rely upon themselves to solve challenges, without adult assistance. At the same time, they have fun. “Our goal,” says Affiliate Director Alisha Day, an alum of the program, “is for every Iowa student to participate in a creative problem solving and teamwork building program.”
Students for a Creative Iowa, www.cre8iowa.org, is one of 48 U.S. and more than 30 international Affiliates participating in the Destination Imagination program. The volunteer organization supports teams in their journey to learn about creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills. This year alone, more than 400 Iowa students will learn about and apply science, technology, engineering, math, and performance principles. Over the course of 25 years, thousands of Iowa students have benefited from this program. One Iowa Team Manager says, “My kids can hardly wait to start every year because they love the challenge and the fact that no adult can input into their solution. They love that they get to use their creativity in a fun and creative way.”
