Matthew Fleshman Named National Merit Scholar

Congratulations to Matthew Fleshman, winner of the National Merit St. Olaf College Scholarship!

Fleshman entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship competition, with more than 1.5 million other juniors nation-wide, when he took the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Less than 1% of those applicants were named semifinalists on a state representational basis.

Fleshman then earned the status of semifinalist, ranking with the highest scoring program entrants in each state. To compete for Merit Scholarship awards, Fleshman advanced to the finalist level of the competition by fulfilling additional requirements. He submitted a scholarship application that included presenting an outstanding academic record; being endorsed and recommended by a school official; and earning SAT scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance. Fleshman also wrote an essay and provided information about extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions. About half of the semifinalists become Merit Scholarship winners.

More than 4,900 winners of National Merit Scholarships are financed by colleges and universities. Officials of each sponsor college select their scholarship winners from among finalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
