Students Win Southeast Iowa Superconference Art Competition

Seven Maharishi Upper School students won awards at the Southeast Iowa Superconference Art Competition and Workshop held March 27 at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. Twenty area schools participated in eight different workshops instructed by area art teachers. Eleven area schools competed and over 150 student works were submitted. Sharon Koelblinger and Greg Thatcher, art teachers at Maharishi School, helped organize the event.

The winning students taught by Greg Thatcher are:

  • Sophomore, Paris Lamoureaux, who placed 1st in the Chromatic Drawing category for her "Untitled" drawing
  • Senior, Kenzie Wacknov, placed 1st in the Mixed Media category for her "Self Portrait"
  • Sophomore, Ryan Smelcer, placed 2nd in the Pastel category for his "Light Bulb" drawing

The winning students taught by Sharon Koelblinger are:

  • Junior, Raphael Burne, who placed 1st in the Photography category for his "Untitled" photograph
  • Junior, Pandy Wadsworth, received an honorable mention in the Photography category for "Keep Out"
  • Junior, Jhana Valentine, received an honorable mention in the Photography category for "Pandora"
  • Junior, Derek Thatcher, received an honorable mention in the Judges Choice category for his mixed media photograph titled "Hallucination #1"


The student works were judged by Dale Divoky, local artist and Maharishi University of Management professor. "Every student who submitted artwork contributed to a very impressive exhibit," said Divoky. "The dedication, talent, and hard work was obvious and appreciated."
