Varsity Girls Basketball 12/06/02

Maharishi School (3-0) defeated Notre Dame 41-39 to win the SEISC Tournament Finals at Cardinal. Both teams played strong defense through out the game with no lead bigger than 6 points. ThePioneers held Notre Dame scoreless until the last 2 minutes of the third quarter and led 32 to 27 after 3 quarters. With 2 minutes to go in the game with Notre Dame leading 37 to 36, Amellia Schuldt made a 3 point shot to give the Pioneers a 39 to 37 lead. Notre Dame tied the score at 39 but fouled Sofia Iwobi on the next trip down the floor. With 45 seconds to go Sofia made both free throws. The Pioneers had to make one final stop and kept Notre Dame from scoring in the final 45 seconds! Sofia led all scorers with 14, Taylor Ross & Amellia had 9 each, Divindy Grant put in 5 and Grace Boyle & Anna Tarnoff both had 2. "Anna played the type of defense I expect from our players finishing with 4 blocks, 5 rebounds & 3 steals", said Maharishi School Coach Higgins. Other oustanding defensive efforts were Amellia with 6 rebounds & 5 steals, Sofia 6 rebounds & 5 steals and Divindy with 4 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Taylor continues her leadership on the court playing all but 1 minute, not only scoring but had 3 steals and 3 assists. Pioneers off to the best start in school history will now play state tournament qualifier Fort Madison Aquinas in a girl/boy double header starting at 6:30 pm on December 10th.
