Maharishi School Girls Basketball Team (15-5) (9-3) celebrated briefly in
the middle of Van Buren's court, they know it was just one game and the 2nd
season (the state tournament) starts on Monday, but they just made history
by beating Van Buren for the first time 44 - 35! Van Buren started the game
strong racing out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter. The Pioneers were able
to cut the lead to only 22-20 by halftime with tight defense and offensive
scoring of Sofia Iwobi. The key for the game was the Pioneers only allowed
Van Buren 2 points in the 3rd quarter. In the fourth quarter the Pioneers
played ball control going for lay-ups. Divindy Grant & Ami Freeberg were
set up inside for key baskets in the 4th quarter. The Pioneers missed three
attempts at 1 & 1's but then closed out the game with Taylor Ross going 5-5
and Amellia Schuldt 2-2 from the line
Ross lead the scoring with 11 including the final free throws and a key
basket late in the game. Iwobi played her best game of the year with 10
points, 11 rebounds, 7 blocks and 7 assists. Freeberg & Grant scored 8 each
on mostly short shots in the second half. Grant also grabbed 8 rebounds and
Schuldt pulled down 6 of the teams 34 rebounds. In Grant's best game of the
year she had 4 steals with Anna Tarnoff getting 3.
The Pioneers finished the regular season at 15-5 and in 3rd place (9-3)
in the Western Conference. The state tournament brings them to Cardinal on
Monday (7:00 pm) to meet the host for the fourth time this season. The
winner will move on to Winfield on Saturday night to meet the winner of the
WACO/Winfield game.
