Maharishi School(16-5) (9-3) started their state tournament with a
familar foe, playing Cardinal for the 4th time this season and again came
away with a victory 51 - 35. The Pioneers knew to respect Cardinal with
their poised athletes from last year's state championship team in softball.
Even after the Pioneers put on a 18-0 run to extend the lead to 23-4,
Cardinal close the lead to 28-17 by halftime! Coach Higgins felt it was
important to build on the lead in the 3rd quarter, which the Pioneers did
leading 38-20 at the end ofthree. The Comets never quit and made some runs
at the Pioneers but were never able to get the lead under double digits and
lost by 16. Key stats for the Pioneers were shooting 48% in the first half.
The offense also had 18 team assists. On the defensive end, the Pioneeers
had 20 steals, 29 rebounds and 6 blocks.
Sofia Iwobi lead the scoring with 18, Taylor Ross had 10 and Divindy
Grant (8pts) & Ami Freeberg (6pts) continue their hot shooting. Top
rebounders were Iwobi with 6, Grant, Freeberg, Amellia Schuldt & Alexandria
Kurzen with 5 each. Ross lead the steal department with 6. Assists were
equally dished out with
Grace Boyle with 5 and Ross & Freeberg with 4 each.
The Pioneers move on to the district finals at Winfield on saturday night
at 7:oo pm. The Pioneers should be playing the host Winfield-Mt. Union.
