Tuesday: Girls defeated Waco 44-28, Sofia had a triple double while Ami Freeberg led all scorers with 19 points. Boys lost to Waco 52-41. They had a strong 4th quarter but were too far behind to come all the way back.
Next game for both is Friday at the Field House vs Danville. The boys will have Steven George in the line-up for his first Varsity game. Steve is a transfer student from Chicago and should help the team.
Saturday: Fairfield public school defeated the Pioneers 48-28 Saturday night at the Field House. More than 800 people enjoyed the match-up, the first ever between the 2 schools in basketball. Fairfield a 3A school was a little to big and fast for the pioneers and were very sharp. The Pioneers although disappointed that they didn't play better learned alot from the contest. Sofia Iwobi led all scorers with 15 points. Next game for both the boys and girls is Tuesday night vs Waco at the Field House.See Fairfield Ledger Article
Friday night the girls Varsity defeated Cardinal 33-26. The Pioneers were ahead 22-5 at the half and then rested the starters. The boys lost 60-44 but played well against a very good Cardinal team.
The girls varsity basketball team defeated Pekin 52-27 to raise their record to 9-1. Sofia Iwobi had 31 points, 13 rebounds and 7 steals to lead the way. For the 4th time this year the Pioneers held their opponent scoreless in the 1st quarter. Ami Freeberg also had 10 points.
The boys varsity team lost a close game to Pekin 56-49. The score was tied at 49 with one minute left. Pekin however made the first basket to break the tie, and after that the pioneers were force to foul a number of times. Justine Heaton was in the zone for most of the second half as he shot 4 consecutive 3's. He finished the game with 20 points with 6-3 pointers.
Monday, ( Jan 9th) the Junior High boys basketball season started with the 7th grade winning a thriller 31-29 as Wesley Folz hit 2 free throws with 4 seconds left. Wesley had 21 points. The 8th grade lost but showed great improvement over last year. Joseph Gelfand was the top scorer with 14 points. Next games are at Cardinal Thursday.
Friday night (Jan 6th) the pioneers had a reversal of fortune with the boys team defeating Central Lee 51-45 while the girls lost for the first time this year 45-41. The Boys with Owen Blake back in the line-up improved their inside game and outscored the Hawks 18-7 in the 3rd quarter to erase a 28-22 half time lead. Mike Macey also had a great effort hitting a couple of key baskets and free-throws down the stretch. Owen led the way with 20 points.
The girls were up for most of their game but hot shooting from Central Lee allowed the Hawks to gain the lead with a few minutes remaining. The pioneers were down 42-38 with less than a minute when Iwobi hit a 3-pointer to close the gap to one. Pioneers forced a turnover with 40 seconds left but never got a shot off as Central lee was able to force a jump ball with the possession arrow in their favour.
Pioneers defeated IMS Saturday, (December 17th), 50-22 to raise their record to 8-0. Sofia had 26 points while Ami Freeberg had another good night with 13 points. Pioneers are now on Christmas break and return to action on January 6th.
Boys varsity team was back in action January 3rd but lost to Twin Cedars 63-35.The F/S team however pulled out a 5 point double overtime victory.
Very big game Friday night (Dec 16th) as the 6th ranked (1A) Pioneers (7-0) defeated the 8th ranked (2A) Van Buren girls team (7-1) 44-37. Sofia Iwobi led the way with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Van Buren jumped to a early 21 to 9 lead but the Pioneers fought back to close the half down 21-19. The Pioneers then opened up a 36 to 27 lead and won by 7. Next game is tomorrow night at 5:00pm at the field House. The opponent is IMS.
The girls varsity basketball team defeated Waco 49-27 Tuesday night. Ami Freeberg had16 points for the second game in a row. Bonnie Carter had her best game to date with 8 points and 11 boards. Sofia Iwobi totaled 11 rebounds, 8 points, 6 blocks and 4 steals. Sheila Higgins had 5 points. Ellora Hans-Price and Nofia Denbaum both scored 4. The Pioneers are unbeaten through 6 games this season.
The boys varsity team ran head on into the 2nd ranked Waco Warriors, losing 78 to 48. Justine Heaton was the top scorer with 13 points followed by Christian Hoffmann with 10. Pioneers are looking forward
to Owen Blake returning to the lineup Friday as well as Steven George in January.
Lady Pioneers had 2 victories over the weekend. They beat Danville Friday night 47-27. The Pioneers got off to a fast start and ended the first quarter with a 16-0 lead. On Saturday the Pioneers made it 5 in a row with a 66-35 win over Columbus Junction. Sofia Iwobi led the way with 25 points, 22 rebounds, 9 steals and 8 assists, while Ami Freeberg had a breakout game adding 16 pts. 7 other players tallied baskets.

The varsity girls basketball team raised its record to 3-0 with a 57-28 win against Pekin in Packwood Tuesday night. Sofia Iwobi turned in a 3rd straight triple double with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 12 steals. See Ledger Article
