Varsity boys trounce Harmony

Led by Zach Silverman's game-high 27 points and Michael Hauptman's career-best 26 points, the varsity boys basketball team scored a season-high 87 points in trouncing Harmony at the Field House.

The squad's improvement over the course of the season was evident in the relative ease of the 87-61 victory compared to the contest against the Rockets on December 7th, when the Pioneers led by as few as 3 points in the fourth quarter.

While Maharishi School steadily built a 38-25 half-time lead, the second half was full of streaks. The lead was stretched to 48-27 but shrank to 56-43 as David Dannemann was lost on fouls in the third quarter. Then Michael Hauptman hit a 3-pointer to close the period, beginning a 20-2 burst that gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the night of 31 points. The starters left the game shortly afterward to a standing ovation.

The entire team gave a strong, hustling defensive effort throughout the game. Zach, Michael, and Willy Kern intimidated Harmony shooters and  dominated the rebounding, while Spencer Bright, Chis Lynch, and Dannemann harassed the visitors' ball handlers, causing numerous turnovers.

Winning for the seventh time in its last eight tries, Maharishi School improved its record to 9-5 for the season and 6-2 in the Southern Division, tied for first place. The next contest is Friday, January 25 against Van Buren (10-5) in Keosauqua, beginning with the Varsity girls game at 6:30 p.m. The boys won an earlier meeting between the teams at the Field House 81-66 but expect a strong challenge from the Warriors on their home court. The girls held a one-point lead against Van Buren with five minutes remaining before falling 43-38. Come on out and support the teams on Friday!
