Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls victorious over Cardinal

The varsity boys basketball team used a smothering defense to take Cardinal out of the game early, en route to a 94-40 victory at the Field House.

The squad continues to show improvement over the season. Only one month ago they struggled to a 43-37 third-quarter lead against the Comets; this time, the score was 77-27 at the end of three periods and the outcome well in hand.

The point total and margin of victory were season highs for Maharishi School, despite resting most of the starters in the fourth quarter. Winning for the 10th time in their last 11 games, the Pioneers are 8-2 in the Western Division and 12-5 overall. They still have a chance to repeat as division champions again this year, as they approach a showdown against first-place Central Lee (9-2, 12-6) this Friday, February 8th, in Donnellson.

Zach Silverman led the scoring with 27 points, including a slam-dunk and a lay-up off an alley-oop pass from David Dannemann. Spencer Bright contributed 13 points and brilliant passing from his point-guard position, in his finest performance of the season. Kevin Craig and Christopher Lynch also had 13 points apiece, Dannemann 9 points, Noah Loin 8 points, and Will Carlisle 7.

The varsity girls defeated the Cardinal girls earlier in the evening, 62-51. It was the best of their three performances against the Comets this year. The game was tight at 40-38 in the third quarter until the Pioneers went on a 16-5 run and put the game away. The girls showed improved defense and passing. They fed the ball inside to Amellia Schuldt, who led all scorers with 20 points. Taylor Ross added 17 points, and Jodi Dey 15 points.

The girls host Pekin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 5th, at the Field House before both varsity teams travel to Central Lee on Friday, February 8th. The boys shocked the favored Golden Hawks 83-58 at the Field House last month, in what was their finest performance of the season, while the girls dropped a 64-44 decision. Please come to Donnellson and support both teams.
