Varsity Boys Basketball
versus West Burlington
February 12, 2002

Varsity boys team victorious over West Burlington
Ordinarily, being held to 8 points in the first quarter would not be good news for our varsity boys' up-tempo type of basketball. But most of the opening period was spent smothering their opponent with an outstanding suffocating defense. They allowed only 2 points, and ended up with a 61-40 road victory over West Burlington.

The Pioneers gave up an early basket and then ran off 12 straight points while holding the Falcons scoreless for more than ten minutes. When the hosts finally got some good looks at the basket, they sank a pair of three-pointers and pulled within 12-10. But David Dannemann made a basket, followed by three-pointers from Zach Silverman and Michael Hauptman. That stretched the lead to 20-10 and Maharishi School's lead was not seriously threatened again. Zach stole the ball at mid-court and passed to Spencer Bright for a lay-up with one second left in the first half, as the Pioneers took a 22-12 lead into the intermission.

Spencer (8 points) hit back-to-back three-pointers to increase the margin to 41-18 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. In the final period, Zach hit a jumper just inside the three-point circle, then stole the Falcons' next possession and dunked to make it 45-23. David Dannemann hit a three-point shot, then took a long bounce-pass from Zach on the fast break to make it 50-25.

David continued his brilliant passing, firing a long lob over the hoop to Zach, who laid it off the backboard for another basket. David fired a bullet pass underneath to Kevin Craig, who scored and converted a free throw after being fouled. Michael Hauptman (9 points) scored on the end of David's next pass, increasing the lead to 57-28 with 3:40 remaining in the game. Zach, with a game-high 24 points, and David (9 points) then went to the bench to a standing ovation from the Fairfield crowd attending the game.

Maharishi School is now 14-6 on the season, entering its final regular season contest. The Pioneers host Pekin at the Field House on Friday, February 15. They defeated the Panthers last month in
Packwood 71-54 and hope to repeat their success. The varsity game follows the junior varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
