Maharishi School Girls Golf
Report of State Class 1A Regional Tournament
Monday, 5-20-02, at Lagos Acres GC in Keota

Sarah Sica qualifies for State Tourney
The Maharishi School girls golf team shot a school record 349 to place
second in the seven team field at the State Class 1A Regional Tournament
in Keota on Monday.  Having won last week in their first round of the
state tournament, they missed winning this round and qualifying for the
state finals by a narrow margin of eight strokes behind Wapello's 341.

Battling for the sole qualifying spot from the toughest Regional in the
state, Wapello and Maharishi posted the lowest and the third lowest
scores of the seven teams that are advancing to the finals from the six
Regionals.  The Pioneers shot a 179 on the front nine to fall ten stokes
behind Wapello's 169.  But they charged back to beat them on the back
nine 170 to 172.  Though the comeback wasn't enough to secure the
victory, it was enough to beat third place Iowa City Regina's 375 by 26
strokes and to take a whopping 45 strokes off the old school record of
394 that they set last week at Districts.

Senior Sarah Sica lead the Pioneers with a career best 77, shooting a 41
on the front nine followed by a two over par 36, which included two
birdies, to take the runner-up medal and one of the three individual
qualifying spots for the state finals next Tuesday and Wednesday in
Granger at Jester Park.

All four Pioneers lowered their front nine scores on the back nine to
post career best scores.  Monica DeAngelis went 42-40 for an 82 and
fifth place in the field of 40 players.  Keri Cleveland shot 45-44 for
an 89.  And Amellia Schuldt completed the Pioneer scoring with a 51-50
for a 101.

Though Sica now moves on to the state finals, the Pioneers most
successful team season ever is now concluded with a Super Conference
division record of 5-0, a dual record of 10-5, and an overall record
including tournaments of 29-6.
