“Every aspect of the Vedic Literature expresses a specific quality of consciousness. Reading every aspect of the Vedic Literature as it flows and progresses in perfect sequential order has the effect of regulating and balancing the functioning of the brain physiology and training consciousness, the mind, always to flow in perfect accordance with the evolutionary direction of Natural Law. This training of the mind fulfills the purpose of education by fully training the student to think and act spontaneously according to Natural Law.”—Maharishi Vedic University: Introduction, 1994, Age of Enlightenment Publications, India, p. 144

Dear Parents,

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC CONCERT AT SCHOOL

Participants from all the school music programs presented a wonderful concert at an all-school assembly last week. There were performances by the Upper School boys’ jazz ensemble, pianists who played their own compositions, violinists, as well as the new school orchestra. It was an impressive display of talent by our students.

SCHOOL UNIFORM INFORMATION

A few weeks ago, a mailing was sent to all families containing uniform ordering information. Please note that uniform orders need to be in the Lower School office by this Friday, May 26.

No orders will be accepted at the School after May 26. This deadline is set to send in a bulk order and to prevent possible back-orders.

As stated in the uniform mailing, you may place orders after this date directly through Dennis Uniform, but you will be charged for shipping and handling.

For your convenience, a limited number of sample sizes of Dennis Uniform items are available for try-on in the School offices.

SPORTS NEWS

This past week has been unprecedented in the history of Maharishi School. Our Spring sports teams have all qualified for the State tournaments. We’d be surprised if there is another school in Iowa that can boast this achievement.

Congratulations to Steven George on winning the long jump at the state track meet with a jump of 22ft 10 3/4 inches. Although our School competes in Class 1A competition, this jump would have won in all four classes. Justin Rocca placed 5th in the 400 meter run. Maharishi School’s team finished 12th overall in the state in class 1A.

Today, the girls’ tennis team is competing at the regional finals in Davenport. The winning team will go on to State. Right now the girls are already in the Elite Eight. They had 3 victories this past week over Notre Dame, Mt. Pleasant, and Holy Trinity.

Congratulations to the boys’ tennis team, who are going to State. They defeated excellent teams from Knoxville and Pella 5-0, 5-0. The boys’ State Individual competition is this Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27, in Waterloo. The team competition is on Tuesday, May 23, in Des Moines.

Congratulations to the boys’ golf team. They, too, are advancing to the State tournament, which takes place on Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27 in  Ankeny. Sam Goldstein led the way at the regional competition with a 2 over par 74, while Danny Steinberg had a 78.

PHYSICALS FOR NEXT YEAR’S SPORTS PROGRAM

If your child is planning to play any sports next year, he/she needs to have a physical. These are available at School with Jody Loin, RN, on the following dates:
Wednesday, May 24, 4:30–7.00 p.m.
Saturday, June 3, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon
Saturday, August 26, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon

Students do not need to schedule an appointment. They simply go to the Athletic Department office during those times.

The cost of the physical is $15, payable to Jody Loin at the time of the examination.

Please note that parents must sign their child’s medical form. You may pick one up from the Athletic Department office ahead of time, so that your child can bring it in signed, or stop in to sign the form when your child comes in for his/her physical.

If you have any questions, please call the Athletic Department at 472-9400 ext. 5535.

PIONEER BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT

The annual Pioneer Benefit Golf Tournament will take place at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course, in Burlington, on Sunday, June 4. This is Maharishi School’s last fundraiser for the year, and offers a fun way of raising much-needed funds for the School.

If you like golf, please consider participating in this enjoyable event. $100 covers your green fee, a cart, and lunch. Call the Development Office at 472-9400 if you would like to play.

NEW WEBSITE FEATURING SANSKRIT QUOTE OF THE DAY

M.U.M. Vedic Science Graduates Paul Stokstad (M.A. in SCI) and Keith Wegman
(Ph.D.) have collaborated to create a website, http://www.sanskritquoteoftheday.com. The website, launched on Akshaya Tritiya (April 30th) this year, offers among other things, a free daily e-mail subscription to receive a Sanskrit quote including the original Devanagari script, a transliteration, and an English translation.

Other elements on the public portion of the site include an extensive section on the value of reading the Vedic literature in Sanskrit and links to resources such as the M.U.M. archives of downloadable copies of the Vedic literature.

Site members receive access to Sanskrit learning tools such as online flashcards, audio pronunciation guides, an audio of each of the published daily quotes, and a weekly lesson on one of the quotes.

They also become eligible for the basic, intermediate, and advanced Sanskrit classes that will be offered by Dr. Wegman using online and audioconference technology.

Dr. Wegman will also be presenting a weekly reading of the Vedic Literature via audioconference, for learning purposes.

The basic goal of the site is to provide pure knowledge every day to e-mail subscribers, and on the higher level, to support the goals of people who want to read the Vedic literature in Sanskrit.

Paul and Keith invite you to enjoy the site and to send comments and suggestions to kwegman@mum.edu or pstokstad@globalcountry.net.
