Dear Parents,

Congratulations to Anjali Krystofiak and Lee Anne Blackmore who have been selected for the All-State Orchestra. Last weekend auditions were held in 16 Southeast Iowa counties.

In Fairfield, 38 students auditioned and Anjali and LeeAnne were among the 15 violinists who were selected. Special recognition goes to Anjali for her third consecutive year in the All-State orchestra and to Lee Anne who was ranked "First in Center" with the highest score of all auditioning violinists in Fairfield.

Middle School parent conferences will take place on Friday, November 3. Conferences are by appointment, so please call the Girls School office (whether your child is a boy or a girl) to schedule appointments with your child’s teachers (472-9400, ext. 3). Grade cards will be given out in the auditorium on that day. Please note that grade cards will not be mailed out this quarter, so please come and pick up your child’s grade card at this meeting.

Upper School parents are invited to Parents’ Night on Wednesday, November 8. This will be an opportunity to meet your child’s second quarter teachers.

After a brief meeting in the Henry Ogden Clark Auditorium (where we cover some general points that apply to this level of the School) parents go from classroom to classroom, following the students’ schedule. The meeting begins at 7:45 p.m.

Grade cards will be given out at this meeting. Please note that grade cards will not be mailed out this quarter, so please come and pick up your child’s grade card at this meeting.

Middle and Upper School students will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (7th and 8th grades) and Iowa Test of Educational Development (grades 9–12) November 6–10. These tests provide a benchmark for us to evaluate the education we are providing to our students.

Please try to not schedule any doctor or dentist appointments for your child in the mornings that week and encourage your child to be well rested.

On Monday, November 6, there will be a mandatory meeting for all students in grades 7–12 (boys and girls) interested in playing basketball this winter. Since all 7th and 8th grade students will be playing basketball this season, they should attend.

The meeting will start at 7:15 p.m. in the Field House. A parent should accompany the student.

Schedules and directions to all games will be handed out at this time. Any student or parent who has not signed a Code of Conduct Agreement will need to sign this at the meeting.

Last week we told you that Christine Goodale is organizing a Sunday brunch once a month to benefit the Dharma Foundation. What we omitted to tell you is that Christine will be using produce grown in the greenhouse at Maharishi School.

We are delighted that the produce grown in our greenhouse can be used to not only provide food for the students, faculty and staff, but that it can also be used to support the Dharma Foundation.

Christine is a wonderful cook, and she will be creating all kinds of scrumptious all-organic culinary delights for the Sunday brunches.

Forthcoming Sunday brunches will be on November 5 and December 3 in the Henry Ogden Clark Auditorium from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  For menu and ticket information, please visit www.dharmafoundation.org.

This past week we mailed information packets to parents explaining new policies in effect at the M.U.M. Recreation Center. All students at Maharishi School use the Recreation Center on occasion, either for physical education or for team practice.

M.U.M. is asking everyone who uses the Recreation Center to complete a Membership Application form and an Athletic Waiver form. The Department of Exercise and Sport Science at M.U.M. needs the information on these forms for their new computerized check-in system and for legal reasons.

Please review the forms with your students so they understand their responsibilities. Forms must be signed by the student and a parent or guardian. Keep the Rules and Policies sheet for your reference.

Please turn in the Membership Application and the Athletic Waiver forms to the P.E. department at Maharishi School by Tuesday, October 30.

Another CIC course is starting this weekend. Seven girls and three boys from Maharishi School will be on the course.

  • “Invincible America” T-shirts are for sale from the 7th grade girls or by calling 472-8750; $15 each or two for $25.
  • Daylight savings time changes this weekend. Set your clocks back an hour on Saturday night.
  • Bike Fest money is due now. Please help your child contact his/her sponsors to collect pledges.

Best Wishes,

Laurie Baumann and Alan Colby
